If you haven't yet tried modifying your cube, a can of silicon spray is cheap. Take it apart, lube it up, and see if you like it. The nice part about cubing is all the parts are really cheap.
If it turns out your cube sucks as a speedcube, you can just go get another one and keep this one as a spare. Then you'll have more than one Rubik's cube, which gets you big points on the geek test.
