I have a speedtouch USB-modem running under plain Mandrake8.0 (no kernel
patches, just the kernel as it is in Mandrake8.0). I use
speedtouch-21062001 and followed the instructions of Bernard P. except
when it tells about recompiling or patching the kernel. Everything works
fine, except for one thing: when I want to stop my adsl-connection
I kill pppd and modem_run and then perform a halt, unfortunately my
system then is uncapable of umounting cleanly my linux partition. I
asked for a solution for this problem several times but nobody seems to
know how.
I now consider upgrading to Mandrake8.1 because it is said that support
for the speedtouch usb modem is better, however I'm not sure whether I
have to remove first some of the stuff I have currently installed for
the speedtouch, or can I just ask Mandrake 8.1 to perform an upgrade
withput danger of messing up everything?

regards,
hugo
