You should remove the line : maxfail 0 from your ppp "adsl" peer file
You can set maxfail to whatever you like, except 0 if you want to avoid inifnite fork problems... In the howto we set it to 25 : maxfail 25 Because we think if pppd+pppoa2/3 are not able to reconnect your box 25 times, they will allways fail.
