nope, there is not a line in /etc/fstab that mentions usbdevfs at all.

I get the line
"usbdevfs /proc/bus/usb -t usbdevfs (rw)"
as output from entering "mount" at command line. so it seems to be mounted
somehow... hotplugging maybe? i have no idea.

this is a really new
install, and I haven't configured the kernel at all. since day one, with
the modem plugged into the box, it has always been initialized.

I forgot to mention before, that after running the 'modem_run' command my
lights are green on left, and amber on right.
