disclaimer: i'm a real serious newbie to linux...my apologies

ok, i'm trying to configure the speedtouch in mandy 8.2. during initial
install of mandrake, it offers the option to set up the connection. i was
thrilled when i saw that under adsl, it does offer the speedtouch as a
viable option. however, it didn't configure properly. then, a few minutes
later, after booting up and configuring x, i launched the mandrake set-up
utility which also has the speedtouch listed. it wasn't perfect as it did
tell me to move a copy of the mgmt.o file into the directory and try again.
after i did that however, it still wouldn't work right.

i THINK the problem is related to that fact that my ISP requires a pppoe
connection. (i know for sure that i need pppoe but don't know if that is in
dead causing the problem.) my guess is that mandy is trying to use pppoa.
the real kicker is i can't tell what has and what hasn't been accomplished
in the tutorials offered on the driver site. anyone got any suggestions?
i'm perfectly willing to switch to another distro if it will be easier for
me. (as i was saying i am really new to linux and i just want to get an
install done with my dsl running so i can concentrate on learning other
things in linux. it is really draining to have to reboot into windoze to
connect and search for guides to doing anything in linux.)

my apologies if im asking something that has been covered. i tried looking
through the archives and couldn't find any specifics on what i need. i found
some stuff, but without any clear resolve. (course i don't speak french, so
that is a b*&ch. :0) ) thanks in advance

-tom

ps. if you tell me to RTFM, please tell me what f*&king manual! :0)
