Hi there...

I've got a server which is crashing fairly often. I've been trying to find out WHY
for ages, and each time I think I know what problem is causing the troubles I fiund
something new. The latest thing I've found is that right before every crash I get a
string of errors from pppoa2.

Oct 23 15:44:29 barbados pppoa2[2075]: CRC error in an AAL5 frame
Oct 23 15:46:00 barbados pppoa2[2075]: CRC error in an AAL5 frame
Oct 23 15:46:56 barbados pppoa2[2075]: CRC error in an AAL5 frame
Oct 23 15:54:23 barbados gnome-name-server[1987]: input condition is: 0x11, exiting
Oct 23 16:01:03 barbados pppoa2[2075]: CRC error in an AAL5 frame
Oct 23 16:53:03 barbados pppoa2[2075]: CRC error in an AAL5 frame

The server is using Mandrake 8.2 and is connected to BTOpenworld via an Alcatel
ADSL modem using Benoit Papillault's driver. The server carries the shared Internet
connection for an office of 5 people, so each time it crashes it's a big pain. What
is a CLC error in an AAL5 frame? And is it possible that this is connected to a
problem in the driver? AND, is it possible that this is what's causing the system to
clam up?

For those who'd like to know what else I've tried, read on...

First I thought it was the screensaver causing the crashes, because not all of the
XScreensavers are actually on the system and when the server was sitting in gdm it
was just randomly scrolling through different screensavers until it got stuck on one
it didn't have. I wasn't using X anyway 99.9% of the time, so I set the machine to
console mode.

Then I thought the problem was the ddclient for connecting to dyndns.org. The client
wasn't working and was spawning endless processes which turned zombie. I killed the
ddclient completely. Cleared it off my system and took it out of the services listing.

I've done a very Windows-y thing and actually reloaded the OS on this machine three
times in total. It's still crashing. If you have any ideas, please let me know!! (on
or off list)

Thanks oodles!
