Has anyone had suces with getting a SpeeTouch USB ADSL modem to work on SuSE8.1 (or even 8.0)? I tried SuSE's 8.0 approach, followed the instructions of Papillaut and also tried the BTO-approach. Nothing works. The instructions are all clear enough though and all modules, configure files and scripts needed are there.
Let me tell what I get when using the BTO-approach: modem is initialized at boot time, you see the lights flashing when the microcode is loaded by modem_run (I use alcaudsl.sys that I took from Windows). When the command pppd call btadsl is issued, I wait some time to see if ifconfig gives anything else then information for network connections than "eth0" and "lo", but nothing comes. No entry for ppp0, though when using the instructions of Papillault, it sometimes was there for a short time. When after this engaging Kinternet (that I use for a 56KHz modem) an entry is shown named ppp1. That somehow shows that the system knows of ppp0, even though is is not "active". What is strange even more is that when trying to connect, the results in /var/log/messages may differ. What I get when booting is the following (leaving out everything I guess is not relevant): Nov 29 00:10:19 linux syslogd 1.4.1: restart.
