Hi

I'm trying to use the pppoe support for pppoa3. When trying to connect
without pppoe I get LCP: timout sending Config-Requests. I suspect that
using pppoe might solve this problem and make my ISP/ADSL provider respond
to my config requests because my brother was able to connect to his related
ISP using pppoe.

I'm trying to follow the directions from 2002-10-20 in the news page
http://speedtouch.sourceforge.net/index.php?/news.en.html. But have not been
able to understand/use it :-{. I have installed rp-pppoe and am supposed to
modify the rp-pppoe peer file according to the directions. My guess is that
this peer file is the file /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf. In /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf I
modified the USER variable, the SYNCHRONOUS=no to SYNCHRONOUS=yes, the
ETH=eth1 to ETH=tap0 but I do not understand what mknod mknod /dev/net/tun c
10 200 means, and I do not see any pty "" line in this file
(/etc/ppp/pppoe.conf).

I saw in mail
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg03758.html that Martin
Drautzburg has managed to make the pppoe work and is planning to write a
HOWTO. I would greatly appreciate it if anyone here could give me more
detailed information on how to get the pppoe support for pppoa3 working. An
HOWTO would be great but any help is gold.

Thanks,
Bjrn Arnar.

Addittional information
=======================
Computer: IBM ThinkPad R31.
OS: RedHat 8.0.
Kernel: 2.4.18-19.8.0.
USB controller: USB-uhci - Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM USB.
Driver version: modem_run version 1.1.
ISP and ADSL provider: Islandssimi, Iceland.
pppd version: 2.4.1.
vpi: 0, vci:35.
roaring penguin version: 3.5.

Here is some additonal information about my mission to get my speedtouch
connected:

(1) I have multiple checked that the information (username, password, vci,
pci) are correct in the /etc/ppp/peers/adsl, /etc/ppp/chap-secrets,
/etc/pp/pap-secrets files.

(2) I think writing:
# /usr/local/sbin/modem_run -v 2 -m -f /path/to/mgmt.o
is working ok with me. The modem gets synchronized.

(3) When I write:
# /usr/sbin/pppd call adsl updetach
I get this message:
"Using interface ppp0
Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/2
sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <asyncmap 0x0> <magic 0xbd85ce25>]
.
.
.

LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Connection terminated.
using channel 4
Using interface ppp0
.
.
."

In the meantime, the /var/log/messages file registers:
"Jan 3 01:55:03 localhost pppd[1396]: Using interface ppp0
Jan 3 01:55:03 localhost pppoa3[1397]: PPPoA3 version 1.1 started by root
(uid 0)
Jan 3 01:55:03 localhost pppoa3[1397]: A previous instance seems to be
running
Jan 3 01:55:03 localhost pppoa3[1397]: Sending the kill signal to 1120 and

Jan  3 01:55:03 localhost pppd[1396]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/pts/2
Jan 3 01:55:03 localhost /etc/hotplug/net.agent: assuming ppp0 is already

Jan 3 01:55:34 localhost pppd[1396]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests

Jan 3 01:55:34 localhost pppoa3[1407]: PPPoA3 version 1.1 started by root

."

(4) I have tried going to /var/run/ and killing the pppoa3 process but that
did not help. If I write
# /sbin/ifconfig ppp0
I get the message
"pppo: error fetching interface information: Device not found".
when the pppd is not running. If pppd is running, then I get:
"ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
          POINTOPOINT NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:3
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)"

(5) I tried using pppoa2 by modifying one line in /etc/ppp/peers/adsl like
the manual says, but then I get this message
"ioctl(PPPIOCGFLAGS): Inappropriate ioctl for device"
when I write:
# /usr/sbin/pppd call adsl -updetach
