Thanks. I finally managed to solve the problem. Apparently, the version of pppd 
(2.4.2b3) in Speedbundle-1.0 doesn't implement the "demand" option properly 
(=in such a way that it works on my box :). I replaced it with SuSE's default 
(2.4.1) and the "demand" connection and everything else started working 
beautifully. No ioctl or file not found errors, no MTU, MRU errors either. -
