Hi Dirk, I see you do indeed have a VIA hub.  These are notorious for not 
working
properly.  What kernel version are you using by the way?

Avoid ports on the front of the case, since they usually have longer cables.  
The speedtouch
modems have sometimes caused problems by drawing too much power from the 
motherboard - you
could try sticking it in a powered external hub instead (i.e. one that gets its 
juice from
a power plug in the wall, not from your computer).

The errors seem pretty harmless to me.

Yes, firmware needs to be uploaded to the modem before you can actually do 
anything
with it - that takes a while.

I know that feeling... it's why the disconnection-not-closing-ATM-connections
problem is still there...
