Hello all, Yesterday I installed my very first Linux distro so I pretty new at all of this. I have ADSL from xs4all in The Netherlands through a SpeedTouch USB modem. Before all this I used knoppix live CD a few times and had no problems connecting. Now I have installen Ubuntu and I can't get it to work. Here's what I did:
I first tried out this, because it worked on knoppix live CD as well: http://speedtouchconf.sourceforge.net/ However, that script complained gcc was not found and I can't install it because I have no net connection under Ubunto (only through windows). So, then I tried this out: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/viewcvs.py/*checkout*/speedtouch/speedtouch/INSTALL?rev=HEAD I downloaded the debian binary (because I don't have gcc installed and because Ubuntu is a debian spin-off). The package manager complained that it needed the pppoe package. I could not find it in the list and without net connection I could not install it anyway. But, since I wanted to do pppoa I figured that I would just let that dependency be. Then I ran speedtouch-setup and speedtouch-start. However, I don't have net connection. google.com cannot be found, the right light on my modem is amber instead of green and speedtouch-stop complains that the file in /var/run/ cound not be found. What can I check? What can I do? As I said, I am pretty much a total linux newbie.
