I tried that and got a module not found message, although I understand you
get this if you have ATM support in the kernel. The question is - do I have
ATM support in the standard FC5 kernel? It would seem strange that the FC5
standard distributed kernel didn't support ADSL and PPPoATM.

I'm also feeling less and less confident that the firmware is being loaded
into my modem properly, I don't really see any of the lights flash as I plug
it in, or as it boots up - they just both come on green and stay like that.
Is there a way to check - would it be in a log file somewhere?

Thanks,

James

It is almost certainly due to lack of ATM support. What happens if you do
        modprobe pppoatm
(as root)?

Ciao,
