Well, at least that works ;-)
Could you send me the output of running with pdf_verbosity=1 and the kerning 
stylesheet enabled?

No, they are not, but they are free and downloadable from http://dejavu-
fonts.org. I use DejaVu for that because there are huge legal issues with font 
embedding in PDF files (like, you probably are forbidden from embedding almost 
all the fonts you have in your system, including all MS core fonts).
