I tried it, and renaming files (by postfixing with a number) is
exactly what Sphinx does. This handles it, but to me renaming files
doesn't "feel" right - I would prefer that Sphinx kept the original
directory structure and filenames. There is no benefit in changing the
original directory structure and filenames when the documentation is
build. There is no association back to the original location of the
image files, and this is potentially confusing when the author of the
documentation tries to relate the generated HTML back to his/her
source.

Having said that, I think in practice it is an annoyance rather than a
major problem, and we are still very keen on Sphinx. I've opened issue
#290 on this, for what it's worth.
