My recent suggestion to add back the smartypants.py processEscapes() function (http://bitbucket.org/birkenfeld/sphinx/issue/498/add-escape-sequences-to-smartypants-quote) was just rejected with the comment:
"I'm against an additional escaping mechanism" "additional"?
