Thanks for your replies Dave and Takayuki ,

Takayuki  - your suggestion of changing the :ref: to :doc: does just what 
I'd like for now. 

Dave, for now I'm just looking at plain html docs (rather than pdf), so 
thanks for your comments and will bear in mind when I start to get a little 
more sophisticated in the doc generation.
