sorry... gross oversight of mine
of course that should have been sphinx/ext/autodoc*
and anyhow there was some refatoring of autodoc.py as
a module from sphinx/ext/autodoc.py to a package
sphinx/ext/autodoc/ with an __init__.py
making comparison less easy
