I understand that the impetus for creating SPI was to own the property for the debian project. And that was seen to be a good idea, and SPI decided to own property for other projects. One of those projects is opensource.org, a project which developed into the Open Source Initiative. A "trademark", Open Source, was thought to have been created, and a registration was entered by SPI into the USPTO for a trademark on Open Source. SPI also registered and owns opensource.org. These are all facts which I believe to be true.
