ok so I have the crankshaft out of the new engine since one of the journals was
trashed and the others were worn. So this is all pretty new to me, I want to be sure
do this right, I have a good manual but want real world opinions and suggestions.. I
plan on replacing both main and rod bearings, and having the crank reground, is there
anything I should be telling the machine shop that will insure perfection? What is the
success rate with using a crank swap program or sending the crank of for a regrind? Am
I gonna get a half arse regrind? the only place locally that does regrinds here is the
napa machine shop and he wants around $30 more than the places that swap or send it of
to the nearest big city for a regrind... I was told seattle has plenty of places that
will grind a crank for $30-50 and was even considering a road trip simply on
principle. I hate being taxed for being isolated when grinding the crank isn't any
harder to do at the napa here than the napa in wash. Anyw!
ays
, I also would like some opinions on having bearing caps cut and rehoned, is this
necessary? and if so at what point? how much or what kind of wear should be a sign of
neading this? I am very new to all this like I said, i just want to be thorough, but
at the same time, I am rebuilding the other engine and plan on putting more money into
that one, so this engine doesn't have to be perfectly restored, I would just like some
predictability wit it, even if I have to swap bearings every 10,000 miles. I would
also like some info as to what the thrust washers do, and how to know from an engine
outta the car how one can tell if they need replacing. i will have more questions soon
I'm sure, but I know this is already getting a little long. any help as always is
greatly apreciated, with out this list I would have given up on this car long ago!

  thanks, Todd
