Need to draw on the experience of the list again pls.

A friend recently bought a lovelly Mk III Spitfire. He has had a bad
couple of weeks with all sort of issues. The one that is stumping us
quite a bit is as follows

Running cool the Spit is fine. However, when he comes into town, slows
down etc the temp guage goes through the roof. When hot, he describes
it as petrol boiling. The fuel comes out over the float chambers.
Strong fuel smells and the car runs badly. When the engine cools again,
all is back to normal.

Any ideas?
