If you want to get your foot in the door, an analog receiver for a couple dollars is adequate. 25 feet of wire is more than enough even for deaf tube receivers. After you get your feet wet you may want to upgrade to more expensive rig. I notice every time most of the people miss the facts: 1. Just started 2. Don't know anything 3. No money Get your hands on what you can for as little as possible. Seek out others with more advanced equipment, talk to a local HAM or Shortwave Listener, see the differences and advantages, learn some of the techniques, then upgrade if it still holds your interest. If you have access to a much higher end digital shortwave receiver or High Frequency Amateur radio right from the start and it is within your budget, you are ahead of the game. If all you can afford is a crystal set, you're STILL in the game, you just need a different antenna.
