Well, if one ignored the relatively recent seizing of Crimea .... :-)
The film emphasized the the Russian starvation of Ukraine during the
30's, as well as increased Russian involvement in Ukraine leading to the
uprising in Kiev as pain points.
As you mention , there seems a legacy of distrust and animosity.

So fast forward 28 years since 1991, isn't that like us hating (both
