Dear Colleagues,
My institution is currently looking to purchase a portable metabolic (CPET) system to enable outdoor VO2 testing etc of trained athletes. After a bit of investigation I have identified several commercially available systems. Several of these systems appear to have undergone peer validation at some stage (many of these quite dated) and I have identified relevant studies applicable to each system below. The published research seems to indicate most systems overestimate VO2 to some extent however this is less of an issue than re-test reliability. I am also most interested in the day to day running of the various systems, after several colleagues identified reliability issues and ongoing maintenance problems (and poor manufacturer back up) with some of these systems. Given the major expense associated with the purchase of these systems I feel it prudent to canvas some further opinions from colleagues who actually use these systems on a regular basis. I would therefore be grateful for opinions and experiences (good and bad) of anyone using these systems especially in terms of validity, reliability and maintenance issues. I would of course be willing to furnish anyone interested with a copy of the responses. Mobile sytems identified and associated studies (but please let me know of any others) Cortex Metamax, (Int J Sp Med, 2001; 22. 593-7) Cosmed 4b (Jsci Med Sport, 2004; 7. 11-22) Jaeger Oxycon mobile (Jssm, 2008; 7. 532-36) Med Graphics VO2000 (Open Sp Med J; 2008; 2. 23-27) Many thanks in anticipation.
