Question #79883 on SpreadUbuntu changed: https://answers.edge.launchpad.net/spreadubuntu/+question/79883
Mike Feravolo proposed the following answer: Hello: The effectiveness of any adveristing catch phrase is based on what it can do for the potenial customer, why they should buy and least important what it is. People tend to be scared off by the word "free", because they don't think of freedom first. So stressing the word freedom here is good. In order for any effective campain to work for free software there has to be money behind i., Iit was real nice of Mr. Shuttleworth to create Ubuntu because it is a good flavor of Linux and freindly to new users. However, without money for real marketing you are "preaching to the chior". The people that you need to reach are windows users not people using other distros. Distro wars and fighting within the Linux community does nothing but scare off new users and promote Microsoft. What is actuly needed for the free software community as a whole is a cross the borad project that is focused entirely on marketing in mainstream media. That means real money for real adveristing, tux the peguin on Times Square, ads on the 6 o'clock news on the major TV networks in the USA and simular mediums overseas. Sure when I hit the $100.000.000 powerball lottery, I will be happy to pledge a couple of million to get this started. But maybe the next time someone thinks of starting a foundation, this is what the objective should be not rolling out yet another flavor of Linux.
