Using the crude method, you can assume that a conservative value for
plastic sheeting would be 20,000 BTU/lb. To meet the 1000 BTU/sq.ft.
limit, you would need to verify that the sheeting weighs no mor than 1
pound per 20 sq.ft., or roughly 0.8 oz. per sq.ft.

We have a combustible attic that will have a drop ceiling installed
beneath the wood trusses (approximately 18in below). There will be
insulation laid on the bottom of the truss supported by plastic
sheeting. NFPA 13 (07ed) 8.15.1.2.16 supports only having sprinklers in
the attic portion and not in the interstitial space between the
insulation and the drop ceiling if "The heat content of the facing,
substrate, and support of the insulation material shall not exceed 1000
Btu / ft^2 (11,3656 kJ/m^2)." Does anyone know how to determine if the
plastic sheeting supporting the insulation meets this criteria?
