Intumescent paints have been around for a long time. The good
companies have UL certification(both U.S. and Canada), require factory
trained applicators, and require Special Inspections under 2006 IBC
and AWCI 12-B.

The brands I am most familiar with are ALBI and PPG, but, there are
hundreds. It isn't a penetrant like typical fire retardant treatment,
but, a surface coating that reacts to heat and expands to a
noncombustible layer that will protect for 1 or 2 hours depending on
brand, substrate, and thickness.

The real problem in concealed, combustible spaces is proper and full
application of all exposed areas. Prefinishing helps, but, thorough
reinspection of in-place items is required. Especially dificult are
pitched roof trusses. Also intumescent paint can be used on unlisted
wood cabinets to make liquid storage cabinets for comubustible liquids
in the IFC.

My only 2 cents.
