What is the obstruction criteria for an upright ESFR? FM 2-2 and NFPA13 is
not clear. Can you provide some guidance or point me to a code section I
have missed? I know is it less then the pendent ESFR but what to you follow?
I have been told it has the same criteria as a standard head , is this
correct?

That is almost exactly what was tested. The concern was that the upright
would operate first and prevent the pendant from operating. It operated
first, but the pendant operated almost immediately after it. It makes a
good solution for obstruction problems in existing systems, but the 35 ft.
height limitation can be a deal killer.

In one particular case I found the upright at 5in and the pendent at 14in
clearance, next to each other.

No restrictions that I am aware of.
If memory serves me right, FM made an earlier statement that localized
upright ESFR sprinklers could be used within an otherwise pendent ESFR
system. That had to break the heart of the mfg that developed the first
upright (since they are far superior in regard to obstructions).
