NFPA 13, 2002 (12.1.1) and 2007 (12.1.1) state that "Sprinkler
protection criteria are based on the assumption that roof vents and
draft curtains are not being used." Obviously, if roof vents aren't
being used, then fans that may be on at the time of a fire would not be
considered in the design criteria either. Since the 13 criteria isn't
based on fans operating then I'd recommend against them. Manually
operated fans for F.D. operations only, maybe.

Subject: Big Ass fans in big box retail stores

Hello,

A client has asked that we look at installing a number of Big Ass fans
in a
big box retail store. The store has control mode density area
sprinklers.
Having read the previous thread re Big Ass fans and ESFR sprinklers do
the
same concerns re air velocity and moving obstructions apply to contol
mode
sprinklers. What are peoples thoughts on this? Also should the fans stop
on
a fire alarm or stay running?

Thanks,
