Matt, While the positive effort is to be applauded it differs from my personal opinion as to the level and type of fire protection that should be provided in assembly occupancies.
Back when the Station Nightclub Fire made headlines I posted an opinion whereas all assembly occupancies be suppressed (sprinklered). This drew lots of criticism, i.e. lack of water supply, cost, need and so forth. I revisited the opinion and agreed that the threshold could be 50, a number corresponding with the building code single means of egress provisions. For each loss of life occurrence, the assembly suppression threshold value gets lower and lower, this is evidenced by the Station Nightclubs predecessor's, Coconut Grove, Beverly Hills Supper Club.... What happened to 50/100. Guess when the news settles, so do the shouts? Occupancy load of 100 or more, automatic fire detection systems. Occupancy load of 300 or more, fire sprinkler systems. In both cases tie alarm activation to sound systems to shut them down and to lighting systems to turn the lights up. Voluntarily reducing the occupant load to eliminate the need for the fire sprinklers is specifically prohibited. It applies to all nightclubs that are modified under the Rehab code, and any nightclub constructed prior to the 1990 edition of the BOCA National Building Code. __,_._,___ _______________________________________________ Sprinklerforum mailing list [email protected] http://lists.firesprinkler.org/mailman/listinfo/sprinklerforum _______________________________________________ Sprinklerforum mailing list [email protected] http://lists.firesprinkler.org/mailman/listinfo/sprinklerforum _______________________________________________ Sprinklerforum mailing list [email protected] http://lists.firesprinkler.org/mailman/listinfo/sprinklerforum
