In 13, 2002 ed, A.8.15.1.1 shows some example riser including
combinations like you have.

Subject: Riser Schematic vs. Installation Practices... (sorry if
doubledup...)

Forum,
*envision if you will...*
Underground piping enters building - sprinkler point of connection is
'typically' @ 1'-0" a.f.f. at which we provide a gate valve - backflow
assembly (or similar) - gate valve; then we proceed to our system.
Next, envision a dual system - (1) wet and (1) dry... After the gate -
a tee which branches off en route to the dry system... include a gate
valve - dry pipe valve- piping to system. Off the tee outlet we go to
the wet system... gate / b'fly valve - riser manifold - piping to
system. Question: can this valve (whether a gate of b'fly) be omitted?
I've seen it installed both ways - arguing that the gate on the
discharge side of the B.F.P. and the Gate on the suction of the Dry can
both be closed to isolate work on the Wet - if and when needed. I have
been on both sides of the argument... dependent on the job / zones /
etc... I've searched through NFPA 13 and cannot locate a specific code
or installation practice that lays this to rest. Anybody else?

Much Appreciation in advance.
Chuck H.
