Ahhh. It seems clear to me that it is not the open grating that is the
key, it is the under 4ft fixed obstruction that would allow the
elimination of sprinklers provided the obstruction could be cleared
according to the charts. I had just thought that I had remembered that
if the grating was a certain percentage "open" or if the grating had a
minimum 1/2" openings or something to that regard; that sprinklers could
be eliminated. Clearly no storage etc...but I am talking about a cell
walkway 12 feet high. Probably just not remembering correctly. Some of
the other comments are interesting in regards to anti defacation and
minimum width so I will check into those. Thank you all for your
responses I will update you with what happens...Oh and just for fun how
about one of my favorite twain comments "Whenever you find that you are
on the side of the majority, it is time to reform."

Rod,

I'm always eager to make snide remarks, inductively logis out a problem
so that the answer is likely to be, to paraphrase Twain, simple, obvious
and wrong, discuss the indisputable like Newtonian physics or my
politocal opinions, or tell stories about Ferraris, but I usually
hesitate to interpret codes and standards (at list on the list). In this
case though I think the standard is pretty clear. This catwalk is an
obstruction and 47 63/64 inches is under 48. I've suggested this exact
remedy to customers. in a jail it has an even greater utility than just
the cost savings. The guests at every steel bar hotel seem to be really
skillful at wrecking whatever you do.
They're even better at it than children so anything that can be done to
reduce the number of attractive nuisances is a win.
