That is soooo freak'n frustrating!!! I can not stand the "just because I say
so" inspectors. What is even more frustrating is when his boss, the FM, knows
even less. I was a plan check inspector for a fire dept. and I took pride in
working with the contractors in getting the job done. If we had a difference,
we worked together to fix the problem. Because of that kind of relationship I
had very few contractors try to pull the wool over my eyes. The ones who did
try to pull the wool quickly learned I turned into the north arrow nazi. lol
Fair, firm and friendly, lets get the job done right and not cost anyone any
more time and money than is necessary.

Understand. We have already been down that road with him, bottom line,
he wants the head. If you read the definitions for bathroom and
compartment in NFPA 13, you will see that it is very clear that they are
separate rooms. We were not able to get him to accept it even when we
showed him what was in black and white.
Good luck,

I am talking to Orange Beach. However, I want to know the TRUTH
regardless of what TP requires. He is hung up on the "required level of
protection"
statement. Where do we define this level?

If it is an AHJ call then I understand. If it is written then we have a
discussion point.

Greg,

A compartment only requires a minimum of 8" lintel, it can have a cased
opening.
However, if you are talking about Orange Beach, then you will have to
add the head.

Subject: bathrooms in 13 residential

NFPA #13 2007 edition

A.3.3.2 Bathroom. A room is still considered a bathroom if it contains
just a toilet. Additionally, two bathrooms can be adjacent to each other
and are considered separate rooms, provided they are enclosed with the
required level of construction.

I have an AHJ that is stating that this excerpt from NFPA #13 is
requiring a toilet room to have 20 minute walls to be considered a
separate room with a UL listed door.

Has anyone researched this? Is this the intent in 13?

Thanks,
Greg
