Bobby,

We do it all the time. The only drawback is if there are hydrants and
there usually are on the yard loop. The typical fire flow for a 200k
sqft. building, depending on construction type, is 4000 gpm (8000 gpm
reduced by 50% for sprinklers). You probably have a 1500 gpm pump with
an 8" bypass. Getting 4000 gpm through 8" especially if you have a BFP
is almost impossible. When we have this situation we end up with a 12"
bypass and parallel 10" BFP's. Maybe the fire flow requirements are
different in your part of the country or the AHJ's don't verify the fire
flow after the private hydrants are installed but its something that
should be considered.

Subject: Single Fire Pump Serving Multiple Buildings

Is there something in the IFC or IBC 2006 or NFPA 20 which would
prohibit a booster fire pump from supplying multiple buildings on the
same property? Would it make any difference if the fire pump was in a
stand alone building or inside a two hour enclosure of one of the
protected buildings?

The scenario is a developer with three detached 200K sq ft spec
warehouse buildings with ESFR systems, all on one property, a good
public water supply but not quite good enough. All buildings are
supplied from a single tap to the public water system with a DDC device
in a vault.

NFPA 13-07 8.2.5 refers to "systems" or "risers" and I don't see the
intent for it to include a booster pump supply.
