Subject: RE: 1/2" thread - 8 K sprinklers

Gentlemen and Ladies;
For years the 1/2 inch threads and the 3/4 inch threads were used to
identify the type of sprinkler. In general, 1/2 inch threads with a 1/2
inch orifice was the base line and if the orifice was less than 1/2 inch
the sprinkler had a pintle on the deflector. Then when 8.0 K Factor
sprinklers were developed the 3/4 inch threads were used to identify
them as 8.0 K factor (17/32" Orifice)   Then when the 11.2 K Factor (.64
Orifice) came on the scene most manufacturers used a pintle on them to
identify them as different from an 8.0 K sprinkler since both had 3/4
inch threads.

 Retrofit sprinklers were developed with an 8.0 and even a 11.2 K
Factors but with a 1/2 inch threads . Their use was restricted to
systems that were existing but were being upgraded to a higher density.

 The use of SIN numbers sort of negates all of this but the language is
still in NFPA 13.

Does anybody have the chapter and verse where it states this handy ? I
can not find it.
