My 2 cents, and worth at least half of that.

Subject: Standpipe questions

For some reason standpipes just baffle me so I have a project that I need
some help on. I have a six story apartment/dorm building with a drive
through (46') going through part of the first and second floor. The riser is
on the first floor on the right side of the drive through. I have a two
stairs going 1st-6th floor on the left and beside drive through, stair going
1st-3rd on right of drive through and stair going 1st-5th at right end.

Looking at NFPA 14

1. Do I need a standpipe at each stair? (All Required Stairwells, see building code)

2. I plan on using a manual dry pipe. Do I still need to calculate a minimal flow rate according to 7.10.1 or because it's manual there is no flow rate? (If you are IFC code see the flow rates required, if I'm not mistaken for a residential structure you'll max out at 1000 Gpm, 4 standpipes would normally require 500+250+250+250.) We always calc the flow for our dry manual, using the FDP pumper as the source, this also gives us the 100 Psi pressure at the top.(Remember for 1000 Gpm flow you'll need a 4 x 2.5 FDC.)FDP usually has the curve for their pumpers.

3. Question 2 also applies to pressure.

4. According to 7.3.2 (5) I have to have a connection at highest access to
roof. There is no access to roof. Do I still put a connection on the roof? Roof flat or Pitched? 14 says if you can't put it on the roof cause it exceeds the pitch limit, you must put it at the highest landing below the roof access.

5. Do these standpipes have to be connected? Whenever possiable interconnect. The FDP has a hard enough job, without trying to guess which connection feed which standpipe. Even if you lable them clearly now, will it still be readable at 2 Am twenty years from now?
