ASBURY PARK, NJ - One woman was pulled unconscious from a fire that engulfed her 14th floor apartment in the Munroe Towers building on Sewall Avenue. Asbury Park fire spokesman Garrett Giberson said the unidentified woman was breathing and had a pulse when she was rescued by firefighters from her smoke-filled apartment. She was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where her condition is unknown at this time. Moses Dow, 43, who has lived for 9 years at Munroe Towers, said he saw firefighters carrying the woman out of the building by hand "because the stretcher would not fit into the elevator.'' Several firefighters at the scene are being treated for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion, Giberson said. The blaze was reported at 11:15 a.m. The 13th, 14th and 15th floors of the apartment building were evacuated. The entire building was not evacuated, Giberson said. Ladders on the firefighters trucks were not tall enough to reach the fire, and hoses had to be carried up to the blaze. Smoke can be seen from about a mile away. Cheryl Bell was at work at Robert Wood Johnson Medical Center in New Brunswick when her son Rahleek Walker called to tell her he had been drivng by and saw the fire. She believed her apartment was one of the ones damaged and was most worried about baby pictures of her four children and trophies they had earned as youngsters. "(They are) things you can't ever replace, but by the looks of it, it's all gone, no way anything could have survived that,'' Bell said as she watched firefighters battle the blaze. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------- As many are aware New Jersey is on the eve of adopting comprehensive high rise sprinkler retrofit requirements.
