Install locks on the access panels, furnish only set of keys to the FM, and
let him come over and babysit all HVAC techies that enter the space?

Subject: CPVC in concealed space

I am working on a school being converted to condos. This is an NFPA
13R system using CPVC pipe in concealed spaces. The Fire Marshal has
requested that sprinklers be added in the space over the bathroom and
kitchen ceilings. The space contains air handling units (no fuel).
The FM's concern is that the access panel to get to the units would
allow the tenants to store things in there. The space is wood
construction and is approximately 20 ft long, 7 ft wide and 4.5 ft
high. There is CPVC pipe running through the space. The Blazemaster
spec states that sprinklers specifically listed for use with CPVC
pipe shall be used in combustible concealed spaces with their product.

The only sprinklers I can find that are listed for this use are
COIN sprinklers (Viking, Tyco). Since this space is over 3 ft high,
COIN's would not necessarily be required, per NFPA 13. Is there a
non-COIN sprinkler that is listed for protecting CPVC? I haven't been
able to find one.

Also, if this is area is to be considered accessible for storage,
then can CPVC pipe be in this space at all? Also, I don't believe the
COIN sprinklers can be used in a space that is considered occupied, n'est
pas?

Obviously, this building has already been piped and this is an
after-the-fact request by the FM.

Thoughts?
