I think if they are CLOSETS in the traditional sense-
They have a layer of drywall between em, they have ceilings, and doors that
are usually shut- then that's compartmentalization and 2 heads are fine in
the corridor I picture running between rows of em.

If they are partition walls that stop, or the walls are chicken wire- then
that's a subdivided, but not compartmentalized, storage area and OH 1 if
it's an 8' ceiling is probably fine.

I recall a lot of small offices and the way they were configured, a news
office had 1" lines feeding 20 heads each- since I only had to flow 1 or 2
of them per line. FM job, approved and installed back in '86.
Compartmentalization should be rewarded.

'Course its great for w mere CET's- we simply apply the cookbook and omit
the heads since we're not required to know more then #13 says to know. Todd,
having those extra PE letters, could be taken to task if it burns down since
he should know better than the committee since he's a RDP.

And Mike B- you sure don't have to apologize to me for expressing yourself
and letting your passion for proper sprinkler work show thru - along with
frustration! I think I did that on this very forum once a couple years ago.
Maybe twicet.

TGIF- go home to your sprinklered domiciles and be safe- Don't light your
shots of stress management before downing them.

I feel certain that this is not what the code intends. In the case you
describe we would consider it Ord. Hazard and calculate it as one room
without omitting the heads.
In virtually all of the cases like this we have seen, the owner has put
chainlink over the tops of the closets and held the walls down to keep the
deflectors 18" above them.
Have a great weekend,

Subject: Gaggle of closets

I am looking an apartment building which is to be designed according
to NFPA 13. On the first level, there is a room which contains 55 -
3'x5' tenant storage closets (mostly filled with shelves). These
would need to be sprinklered, which is fine, but the issue comes in
the hydraulics. Section 14.4.4.4.2 states that closets with a single
sprinkler may be omitted from the calculation. There could be up to
47 closets in the remote area. I have used this exception numerous
times, but never in this quantity. The standard says nothing to the
contrary, so I could eliminate 47 sprinklers in the remote area
because they are in closets? Is there something I am overlooking?
