If you don't have access to get a wrench on the top fitting to hold back
the pressure, then you stand a very good chance of breaking the pipe.

Subject: Removing sprinkler on CPVC pipe

If I ask that a sprinkler be removed from CPVC pipe, what are the
chances that a pipe may be broken in the process?  Any precautions to
take?  I am thinking of the dry sprinkler that has to be removed for
testing after ten years.
