A REAL engineer would have recognized a potential controversy - or at least an
honest miss- by the contractors and therefore would have added a plan note
indicating that the shafts were to be protected. Better yet: design the system
to eliminate ANY question about your intent/interpretation of the codes. I'm
tired of shameless, lazy engineers playing 'gotcha' by waiting for the shop
drawings to identify what they feel should be included in a design.

But I digress: 8.15.2.1.2 seems to address your situation - therefore, no,
sprinklers are not required at the tops of those shafts.

Subject: Vertical Shafts

I've been spanked by an engineer concerning the section on vertical shafts
2007 13- 8.15.2. I have a detention facility with prisoner cells that have a
vertical mech. shaft at the rear of each pair of cells. The entire building
is non-combustible. The attic space above these shafts is non-combustible
and not sprinklered. These shafts are open at the top. The attic space has
no access for storage. Is it within the intent of 8.15.2 to install a
sprinkler over each of these shafts?

Really would appreciate some input on this.

Thanks
