This is actually a great example of why residential fire sprinkler requirements are needed. The home builder being interviewed makes the point that most homeowners given the option "would rather have a big refrigerator or fireplace" for the same money they would spend on a fire sprinkler system.
Exactly the point...a home is only built once and most homeowners are putting in big refrigerators and fireplaces instead of a life safety system that will last the lifetime of the house. I'm guilty of this as well in the first home I built prior to being involved in the fire protection industry. I went for the built-in home theater and skipped right over the fire sprinkler option. Most people just aren't thinking fire safety when they are buying a new home. The easily neglected option to install residential fire sprinklers affects the fire safety of the occupants of that home for decades to come. The time to install is during home construction and the only way to ensure that happens is by mandating it through code requirements.
