The 14 states that standpipes shall be interconnected at the base or as close
to the base as possible. In this case, if the field conditions don't allow it
to be at the base, you can certainly run it up in the attic, so long as you can
prove hydraulically that the required flow and pressure are available at the
remote hose connections from the FDC. There is a proposal in the current
cycle that is intended to clarify intent regarding protection of piping; it's
not really a change so much as an improvement on the wording (right Roland?).
Horizontal piping requires protection equal to the stair shaft rating in
unsprinklered buildings, except for branch lines to individual hose
connections. Horizontal piping does not require special protection in
buildings furnished throughout by an approved automatic sprinkler system, which
the standard very clearly states may be either a 13 or 13R system as prescribed
by the building code. So if it's fully sprinklered, I think you're still
okay, even if the attic itself isn't fire protected.

The foregoing is my opinion only and does not necessarily represent the opinion
or intent of the NFPA 14 Technical Committee on Standpipe and Hose Systems.

Subject: Standpipe lateral piping In 13R attic

NFPA 14

6.1.2.2

Standpipes and lateral piping supplied by standpipes shall be located in
enclosed exit

Stairways or shall be protected by a degree of fire resistance equal to that
required for enclosed

Exit stairways in the building in which they are located.

6.1.2.2.1

In buildings equipped with an approved automatic sprinkler system, lateral
piping to

2½ in. hose connections shall not be required to be protected.

I have a situation in a 4 story high price condos in Hawaii where there is no
room to run our lateral

piping to our standpipes on the ground level. The only option is a top feed
standpipe system running

through the attic (or building soffits on the first floor which they would
prefer not to do). Does the above section 6.2.2.1 imply a full 13 system or an
approved system for that building (13R). (There are no sprinklers in attic).
