John, The hospital is in CT and the Codes up here are vague.
Update - I walked the whole facility for the first time this morning.
The hospital consists of three interconnected buildings built between
1933 and 1960 +/- (plus many revisions since). Two of them have
standpipes with 1-1/2" valves and the third building has hose
cabinets with 2-1/2" and 1-1/2" valves. All standpipes have 4" feeds
and 2-1/2" sch 40 risers. And 45 psi in the street.
To make matters more interesting, there are three services into the
building with three risers. All have been interconnected at some
point with 4". This is going to have to figured out first before I
can address hydraulics.
Is it Miller time yet?

Todd,
I would think that it would depend on the jurisdiction.
New Jerseys Rehabilitation Subcode (NJAC 5:23-6) addresses this issue
extensively.
Is it in NJ ?

Subject: Hospital standpipe
I am working with local 5-story hospital that has an existing Class II
standpipe. If this was being built as a new structure, there would be a
Class I or III installed. Is there any reason why the standpipe system
would need to be upgraded? (We are doing a water supply upgrade and
would need to know if this would be an issue)
