Good Afternoon All:
Does anybody know if a surge arrester exists for fire protection systems? I
was testing a pump this morning at a clients facility, meanwhile one of our
fitters was at the same clients other facility dealing with apparent water
hammers (the pump had nothing to do with the scenario it takes suction
from a tank). Coincidently I noticed a fire hydrant equipped with a hydrant
meter and hose next to the property that I was at, two Tenders show up to
fill at that time to fill up with water bingo there is the cause of the
water hammers. The truck drivers were closing the 2 ½ ball valves on the
truck fill line opposed to the gate valve on the hydrant meter. Talking to
the maintenance people of the facility experiencing the hammers, they say
this has been going one for 3 days now and mentioned the sprinkler system
was really getting banged around because of the hammers. I educated the
company that was hauling the water on shutting down with the gate valve,
however company X might come along and do the same thing causing damage to
the sprinkler system.
So with this all said does anybody have any ideas on how to minimize the
water hammers?
My company got dragged into a lawsuit several years ago because of this very
thing at a different location. Developer X was watering down a construction
site getting the water from a hydrant attached to the lead in for the
sprinkler system, building owner shut off the alarm line valve so the WMG
wouldnt ring, 3 days later a 6 Vic coupling blew apart on top of the riser
caused lots of water damage. We got blamed since we installed the system 10
years earlier. What a great legal system we have here, nobody seems to fess
up to their own actions or lack of.
