Not sure of the consesus for the previous postings. But how I look at it is:

If you use residential heads they must comply with manufacturer's
installation instructions. If a sidewall is DESIGNED for 12" below the
ceiling it must be maximum 12" below the highest ceiling in its area of
coverage. So if you have a soffit, the s/w can be below the soffit, provided
it is no more than 12" below the highest ceiling (in its area of coverage).
Rsidential pendent heads will be a problem. You'd have to be 1 to 4" below
the highest ceiling (in it area of coverage) and also be not obstructed by
the lower ceilings. So you'd need heads in the pockets and also maybe below
the lower ceilings. Unless of course, the head listing permits greater
distance from deflector to ceiling.

If you can use non-residential sprinklers then I think the 13 pockets rules
should apply, even though the building is 13R. If building is 13D, unless it
has being revised, all heads have to be residential (check, maybe it has
been changed). That is what I think.

Subject: NFPA 13R/D and ceiling pockets

I know there was some discussion a while back re how to treat ceiling
pockets in a 13R or D occupancy. I couldn't find it in my archives and the
Forum section of firesprinkler.org crashed Firefox (that will teach me to
argue with Steve...). What was the consensus on how to treat this?
