I am working on a large wood-frame building with a LH occupancy. They are running ductwork down from the attic along the columns on the second floor to feed the first floor HVAC. They oversized some of the chases (4' x 1.5' and 6' x 1.5') for architectural reasons. The chase walls are sheetrock on wood stud. The top of these was going to be open to the attic, so I assumed that the sprinklers in the attic would provide any needed protection to those areas. Now the AHJ is making them cop the chases for smoke control reasons. Therefore, we now have combustible shafts with no protection. According to 8.14.2 (NFPA 13 - 2002), these would need to be sprinklered. As an alternative, could the shaft be filled with insulation similar to 8.14.1.2.7? This is going to add a bunch of sprinklers into non-accessible spaces, which I would like to avoid.
