Jim,

This was settled in MN by an administrative law judge back in the early
90's. Nothing has changed thus no RPZ or double checks required in MN.
Doesn't matter what AWWA or plumbing inspectors have to say. There's even a
staff opinion floating around the in the Dept. saying the same. Be careful
you are not being played. I started this latest argument.

Now if it is a foam or anti-freeze system they have an issue.

They really need to use some common sense. Anything a fire truck is going
to put in is no worse than what is already in water. And they are having a
hard time understanding fires are rare in sprinklered buildings and it's
almost unheard of for a FD to use the FDC even when it's a fire in a
sprinklered building. Remember most fires are out when the FD arrives. In
10 years in St. Paul and 16 years riding big RED trucks in other departments
I only know of one case where the FDC was used on a sprinkler system.

Subject: RPZ backflow protection

The plumbing inspectors have been concerned that the lubricate in fire
truck pumps could contaminate the domestic water supply and would like
RPZs installed on systems with FDCs. Has anyone else faced this problem

"Staff opinion: Unless otherwise noted ,the response provided above is
a staff opinion provided by a member of the Construction Codes and
Licensing Division. A staff opinion is the opinion of one staff member
about the correct answer to a specific question generated by a
customer. The opinion is not binding.
