I ran into a similar problem with XL pipe while inspecting a leak on  
sprig ups and found that the threads were cut to deep, it seemed like  
only the sprigs with bad cuts were corroading not any other sprigs.  
The system was only a few years old at the time ( more than ten years  
ago). I changed it to black pipe schedule .40 when I replaced them.
