John,

And before the advent of indoor plumbing there was no choice in home
fire protection except those large hoses and the fire bucket (look to
the first episode of HBO's "John Adams" to see the frustration of the
bucket brigade and the frozen pump handle). It's amazing how long
since we started putting pipes in the house that it's taken us to put
sprinkler heads on them. For another interesting look at fire fighting
see "Japanese Homes and their Surroundings." Written shortly after the
opening of Japan there's a few pages about how each homeowner is
expected to keep a hand pump, pike, hose and other fire fighting
implements in good repair.
