I have a situation I have not run across before and am hoping to enlist the
help of the forum. A recent inspection of 2 local fire houses has me baffled.
The building exact dimensions I dont have yet. Buildng is has 6 sleeping
rooms, 1 very large work out room, large living room/dining/kitchen with a 26
foot deck. 3 offices and an 8 truck high bay with 3 service room attached
to one side. Riser is an 1.5 inch that is tapped off of the domestic
line. System starts off copper, transitions to CPVC at the riser and some
where above the ceiling converts to Pos-Lock. Every piece of pipe in the
original building is 1.5". There is a 5" Storx for FDC. When the cap is
removed the 5" is reduced to 1.5" within 6" length. the 1.5" pipe runs up to
the end of a branchline and ties in to system with swing check. 2 additions
have taken place since the original build. 5 dry sidewalls (all tied into the
same 1" branchline) have been
tied to the 1.5" main on the remote end of the system by a 1/2" nipple on each
end. When asked for the previous inspection report the Captain tells me "the
rest of the story".
The system was originally installed by the fire department to save money.
There was never any formal design or calcs. No permit or even a sign off. No
extra underground tap or even a pressure test. They are asking me to address
the FDC which I do believe is a problem, but do not believe the problem lies
just with the FDC. When I reviewed another report I found that there were two
stations done this way. Talking with one of the employees that has been around
since Jesus I was told there was actually 3 stations done like this but one
building is now a storage bldg. Higher ups on the ladder are telling me to
stay clear of this because of who the customer is. Any suggestions?
